Once I was prepared with a note pad , and camera I busted open the sealed package. As I lifted the lid I was greeted with the following welcome letter.
I read the letter and my fingers were itching to proceed to discover what books I received and what additional goodies I was going to find.
The box was packaged thoughtfully. I enjoyed the addition of the caution tape to help set the mood for the theme.
My first non-book find was the classic Frankenstein magnet. It is about 3x5" and a heavy weight magnet ensures my granddaughter's art will stay fast to my fridge.
Okay, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with a mini Riddler voodoo doll, probably give it to Kat. It isn't scary but it is unique so I give it a thumbs up for being added to my box. I like that they have a recommended reading to go along with it.
All three books are wrapped in brown paper which makes me feel like I'm really getting a present since there is something to unwrap. I'll admit it I love presents and I'm as bad and my grandkids unwrapping is most of the fun :-)
My first book is Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad. Yay, two books in one. That means I got four books. I don't know about anyone else but there is no such this as too many books.
As I look at the book I feel like it is a spooky story. I opened it up and was surprised to see how old the book seemed. When I think of gently used books I think of the books I would purchase at second hand stores or Half Price Books. Usually they don't sell books whose covers are bent or torn. Hmm I am kind of disappointed but I think to myself this is something new to me so who cares. I have looked the book up and if you were to purchase this on Amazon it runs from $0.01 to $4.95 plus shipping. Even if I bough it for one cent the shipping brings the total cost to $4.00.
According to editorial reviews on Amazon, Heart of Darkness is "The story of the civilized, enlightened Mr. Kurtz who embarks on a harrowing 'night journey' into the savage heart of Africa, only to find his dark and evil soul. While this sounds intriguing it really isn't my cup of tea or should I say coffee. So I went on to discover more about the second story. The Secret Sharer is about the journey of a "young, inexperienced skipper forced to decide the fate of a fugitive sailor who killed a man in self-defense". According to the book jacket the stories are "symbolic voyages".
While I have no interest in this genre I can appreciate that everything I found out about the author Joseph Conrad indicates he was a renowned novelist who according to some inspired authors such as Ernest Hemingway and some of his novels were adapted in film. Heart of Darkness was supposedly the inspiration for the 1979 Francis Ford Coppala's movie Apocalypse Now.
I went back to discovering more goodies. I found a Star Wars glow stick, a few stickers, a handmade bookmark and a sample of organic coffee. No candy???? Well that was disappointing. Not that I need or really want candy but the welcome letter says I'll find candy because its Halloween. The bookmark is lovely and the bottom of it looks like a witches broom which is keeping with the theme.
I unwrapped the second book. This book was originally published in 1970, this publication is from 1985. The cover and pages are in better shape then the first book but the pages are old and have the orange/yellow tint. For this publishing the book is about $2.50 with shipping you can have it in your hands for a total of $6.50.
The cover only describes it at a "an epic novel of love, magic and family pride". Further investigation online I discover the novel depicts the history of a Chilean family , spanning decades. According to San Francisco Chronical "Isabel Allende has indeed shown us the relationships between past and present, family and nation, city and country, spiritual and political values".
While I usually choose Romance and Fiction to read I will add this to my TBR pile.
Last book is opened. Okay I'm taken aback. I have no idea what this book is about. I admit liking a striking book jacket. I am often drawn to a book by its cover. Sometimes they jump out to me and scream READ ME! This book cover screams HUH? It looks like something my brother would have read as a teenager. Surprisingly this is a newer book than the first two. It was published in 2005. The book it in pretty good shape, no physical wear and tear. It sells for $1.17 used so with shipping it would be about $5.15.
The fantasy tale is the 12th of 18 books of the series. According to the author's website there are going to be even more to come. This novel covers the adventure of Kharl, a cooper in the middle-aged saga.
My box is now empty except for the sticker you see above. I don't know about you but I'm bummed. I wish I could think of a more eloquent word but BUMMED just sums it up. I feel disappointed and let down. Out of the three books there is one I have added to my TBR pile, though I'm not sure when I will read it when each month there are books being published which I can't wait to read.
After adding up the value of the box about $15.65 for the books themselves (if you add in shipping, you could get them much cheaper at a local used bookstore), add in a few dollars for the coffee sample and a few more dollars for the magnet and dollar for the glow stick /stickers. The box is valued close to $20. I paid $26.99 for the box (the advertised 19.99 plus tax/shipping).
I don't feel that it was worth the cost. I have already cancelled my next box's delivery. I really hope the other book subscription turns out better.
I hope my review helps anyone who was looking to try this service. I paid for my subscription box and was not given anything for my review.
I give Blue Spider's Attic- 1 out of 5 Lattes
